Carnival Chronicles: Edition 2 - House of Horrors

by Phoebe Tan and Chloe Chua (Sec 3E)

While every other Fairsian’s heart brimmed with joy, a particular girl’s heart pounded to the beat of Fear’s drum. An empty void lay before her. A voice whispered a story it never lived to tell, dangerously close to her ear. “Go!” it urged. “Follow the lights.” So she did, marking the start of a journey filled with blood-curdling screams.

What is a carnival without a Horror House? This year, Fairfield’s Secondary Five students came up with a truly show-stopping Horror House that attracted a long line of horror enthusiasts seeking a good scare that day - Asylum. These students conscientiously spent much time and effort to prepare for the big day which saw an excellent turnout.

Messily spelt out in dripping red hand prints that resembled blood, the word ‘Asylum’ was sprawled on a banner. Proudly strung up right above the dunk tank, the striking art piece successfully drew the attention of many.

The girl stepped into the house cautiously, letting her curiosity get the better of her. With only the guidance of a flashing spotlight and a pink glow stick, she manoeuvred her way to the exit, feeling anxious as the ominous glow of the light she carried raised the fear factor even higher.

Utilising the space of just two classrooms, desks, whiteboards and black sheets, a solid maze had been created.

The actors had fake blood smeared over their white half-shredded attires and their limbs. SFX (Special Effects) wax was used to alter their facial features so that they would resemble ghouls and monsters straight out of a horror movie.

An ear-shattering scream pierced the stagnant, silent air. A loud bang was heard!

Within seconds, the girl came stumbling out of the Asylum, her face a picture of raw terror as she breathed heavily. Looking back in disbelief, she pressed a trembling hand to her chest as she struggled to regain her composure.

Several metres away, another young, expectant target made his way to the entrance.

A scream was heard.

“Welcome to the Asylum!”
