2018 Direct School Admission ─ Performing Arts


Our selection panel seeks to identify students with high levels of ability and achievement in the following performing arts:

                                      - Choir (Boys & Girls)

                                      - English Drama (Boys & Girls)

- Guitar Ensemble (Boys & Girls)

                                      - Modern Contemporary Dance (Boys & Girls)

                                      - Symphonic Band (Boys & Girls)

Selection Criteria

 


Performing Arts
Requirements
Choir 
Represented the school in the most recent SYF Arts Presentation and attained at least a Certificate of Accomplishment, or represented the school in International Competition and attained at least a Silver Award.

Preferably has received voice-training.

Applicants should be prepared to:
-Be tested on pitch, note intervals and rhythm feel.
- Sing a song of your choice (e.g. Classical, Folk, Ethnic) - a relatively difficult piece that shows good breath control and airflow, effective technical control, tone and tempo control. If the applicant has participated in the SYF Choral Presentation, he/she is advised to sing one of the SYF pieces.
-Bring along a copy of the choral score for the examiner to check on the applicant's accuracy of notes, tempo control and dynamic contrast
English Drama 
Represented the school in the most recent SYF Arts Presentation and attained at least a Certificate of Accomplishment, or represented the school in International Competition and attained at least a Silver Award.

Preferably has received training in Drama.

Applicants should be prepared to:
-Participate in individual and group work.
-Be assessed on improvisation, articulation, pronunciation, enunciation, voice projection, body movements and facial expressions.
Guitar Ensemble 
Represented school in the most recent SYF and attained at least a Certificate of Accomplishment, or represented the school in International Competition and attained at least a Silver Award. 

Preferably has received formal classical guitar lessons and attained at least a grade 3 in guitar. Applicants need to submit a certified copy of his/her music qualifications e.g. ABRSM, LCM, TCM prior to the DSA selection.  

All applicants should be prepared to play the following: 

A : Techniques

 1- SCALES( two octaves )
i) C major ( with i&m / tirando & apoyando)
ii) G major ( thumb for lower octave and fingers for upper octave with tirando )

2- ARPEGGIOS with the following chord progression C/G7, G7/C, Am/Dm, C6/4 (C on G bass)
Please refer to the picture attached for Right- hand fingering and chord progressions

B : Repertoires

Candidates must prepare two contrasting solo pieces of their own choice, copy of the scores must be presented.

C : Duet 

Candidates will be given a simple (single note) piece to prepare before-hand and play with the examiner during the audition. 

D : Aural 

i) candidates will be asked to repeat the rhythm clapped or produced by examiner
ii) candidates will be asked to sing a few short melodies played by the examiner

Modern Contemporary Dance 
Represented the school in the most recent SYF Arts Presentation and attained at least a Certificate of Accomplishment, or represented the school in International Competition and attained at least a Silver Award.

Applicants should be prepared to:
- Present a solo self-picked choreography of minimum 90 seconds.
- Bring own music on a CD.
- Participate in a group warm up segment where flexibility and foundation skills/techniques will be assessed.
- Learn a short contemporary piece and be expected to remember the choreography.  Then the applicant has to present the newly-learnt choreography in a group as well as solo. 
 Symphonic Band 
Represented the school in the most recent SYF Arts Presentation and attained at least a Certificate of Accomplishment, or represented the school in International Competition and attained at least a Silver Award.

Applicants should be prepared to:
-Perform a piece of their choice on a band instrument listed below.
- Be given a piece to sight read.
- Be tested on scales (e.g. concert B-flat, E-flat, F, one octave).
- Bring own instrument for the audition. (Only percussion instruments will be provided for audition.)
- Submit a certified copy of his/her music qualifications e.g. ABRSM, Trinity College of Music or London College of Music prior to the DSA selection.

Applicants who are not from a Band CCA must be able to play one of the band instruments listed below.

- Tuba (BB Flat) 






 

Point to Note:

Applicants who have scored an average of at least 60% for all subjects in their Primary 4, 5 and 6 examinations will have an advantage.
